Financial paperwork confuses almost every family: requirements differ for university admission, the I-20, the visa interview, and need-based aid forms.
For the I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility)
Schools must document that you can cover the estimated cost of attendance on your I-20. Typical items include:
- Recent official bank statement(s) in your or your sponsor’s name
- Signed affidavit or sponsor letter if funds are not solely yours
- Employer letter and pay stubs for employed sponsors (when requested)
Visa Interview Packet
Consular officers assess whether funding is credible and lawful. Bring clear, consistent documents that match your DS-160 and I-20. Scholarship letters strengthen weak cash-balance cases.
CSS Profile (Need-Based Aid)
Selective private colleges that award need-based aid to internationals may require the CSS Profile—a detailed parent financial disclosure. Fees apply per school; fee waivers may be available.
Translations
Non-English documents usually need certified translations. Follow each school’s and embassy’s formatting rules.
