What “Test-Optional” Really Means

It does not always mean “no disadvantage without scores.” At many colleges, applicants who submit competitive scores still outperform similar profiles without scores—especially for aid tied to score bands.

SAT vs. ACT

SAT (Digital)

• Reading/Writing + Math; total 400–1600
• Often suits students strong in algebra and data interpretation

ACT

• English, Math, Reading, Science; composite 1–36
• Faster pacing; science reasoning section is unique

Take one official practice test for each if unsure; prep the exam where you naturally score higher.

Approximate Targets

• SAT 1400+ / ACT 32+: Very selective tiers
• SAT 1300–1400 / ACT 28–31: Strong public flagships and merit tiers
• SAT 1200–1300 / ACT 24–27: Broad range of universities
